LEARN HOW TO READ A LABEL

Posted in 06/10/2022

The drafting of a label is highly regulated and is subject to frequent checks by the DGCCRF (repression of French fraud).

How to read a label

In a label, you will find mandatory information, to be written with a font size large enough to be readable. Among these obligatory mentions, you will find :

  • The product name
  • The type of product: “drug”, “food supplement”, etc.
  • The recommended daily dose: 2 capsules, 3 tablets, 5 grams, 10 milliliters
  • The precise dosage of active ingredients, dosed in grams, milligrams, micrograms per recommended daily dose
  • The list of raw materials, described in descending order of quantities
  • The origin of the raw materials, only vegetable: European Union, outside the European Union
  • The presence of allergens
  • Intake of active ingredients in % of NRVs: Nutritional Reference Values (daily intake necessary for an adult)
  • The name, address of the marketer
  • The precise weight (mass) of the product purchased (without the packaging of course)
  • Recommendations for use: min/max number of units to obtain a result, how to consume the product and when
  • Precautions for use
  • If you mention a benefit, the claim that allows you to justify this benefit
  • The sorting pictogram will be made compulsory from January 1st, 2023

With all these mandatory mentions, you will understand better why, now, for lack of space, we are not always able to put all the claims on the products. If you want more details on the uses, the quality of products, we invite you to visit the sites of the sellers to better understand these products (origin, level of range, etc.). If you do not find more information than on the labels, we invite you to be really careful in your choice because, very often, you will be faced with low quality products.

In conclusion, take the time to analyze the labels. You have a lot of information about them. Use them to compare products. If you take the time to read them, you will often understand the price differences between products much better. The presence of an effective ingredient in a formula does not mean that the formula will be effective. The fact that a good ingredient is present is a good thing, but it still has to be sufficiently dosed.
